Love that Zooey Deschanel!

Sam Jones just shot the advertising campaign for ” New Girl ” TV series for Channel 4 in the United Kingdom.  As we know the show originated here in the USA on FOX and is a big hit  and it has now moved over to the U.K.  Sam has worked with Zooey before and he was so happy to shoot her again.  Zooey has just released with M. Ward a Christmas album too – A She & Him Christmas  – check it out – it is my favorite new Chrismas album of 2011.

Our boys in South Africa……

Christopher Wray-McCann just got back from an amazing month long advertising job in Capetown, South Africa.  After the shoot he and his team went on a safari ( how jealous am I? ) and saw some big cats and amazing animals at the Ngala Private Game Reserve.  I laughed when I saw this on Christopher’s Tumblr site…..Ronnie and Captain Carl in the wilds!

I want to do a shout out to Carol Cohen our fantastic Los Angeles based producer who was along for the adventure and the wonderful people, Dale and Brin at AFS in Capetown our amazing local production company.  I wish I had been able to go!

Mannix Flynn in NYC

I met Mannix Flynn through Perry Ogden in Dublin many years ago.  Mannix is a man of many talents and now in New York one of his one man theater pieces is running at a theater in the Village.  Presented by Liam Neeson and Gabriel Byrne and directed by Gabriel, I would highly recommend that you try to see this.  Any chance to see him perform is a must if you love theater and have any interest in Ireland – it is the semi autobiographical story of a child growing up in rural Ireland and the widespread child abuse by members of the Roman Catholic Church.   James X is a book that Perry just gave me to read and I wish I was in NYC and could see this.

Do you know about Vivian Maier?

Several years ago my friend Brian Howard told me about the amazing story of the photographer Vivian Maier.  From her website:   An American of French and Austro-Hungarian extraction, Vivian bounced between Europe and the United States before coming back to New York City in 1951.  Having picked up photography just two years earlier, she would comb the streets of the Big Apple refining her artistic craft. By 1956 Vivian left the East Coast for Chicago, where she’d spend most of the rest of her life working as a caregiver. In her leisure Vivian would shoot photos that she zealously hid from the eyes of others. Taking snapshots into the late 1990′s, Maier would leave behind a body of work comprising over 100,000 negatives.  Maier’s massive body of work would come to light when in 2007 her work was discovered at a local thrift auction house on Chicago’s Northwest Side. From there, it would eventually impact the world over and change the life of the man who championed her work and brought it to the public eye, John Maloof.

There have been several exhibitions of her work and now there is a film being made.  This is one of the most amazing stories in photography ever.  It keeps me looking at boxes of photographs that I see at garage and yard sales, flea markets and at small auctions!  Treat yourself and look at the images on her website which John Maloof created and or if you are in New York go to Howard Greenberg Gallery ( one of my favorites ) and see the show which opens December 15th.

Dawes photographed by Sam Jones in Men’s Journal December 2011 Issue

Sam Jones shot a music video for the band Dawes a few months ago and then he was asked to photograph the band for a Men’s Journal magazine fashion story.  The pictures are great – I love this one in particular.  Take a look at Sam’s website to see more images or the video and go buy the magazine!  We all have to support magazines!
