SiS / Blog / Two Sisters – This is SO GOOD!

I had the chance to have dinner with these two sister’s parents – two incredible people and artists themselves and learned about their daughters blog. As featured in Teen Vogue – see it here sisters Luisa Cameron (age 14,) and Fernanda Cameron (age 12,) are the co-founders of SiSMagazine and SiS/blog.

From their blog – read about them and check out the blog!

Started two years ago, SiS was a charitable online magazine. With four issues total, SiS was Luisa and Fernanda’s way of expressing themselves creatively: interviews, art, photography, music, fashion, food, and anything that inspired them. With a large readership, SiS was a great experience for the two sisters.

However, SiS wasn’t just about exploring creativity. Luisa and Fernanda also explored entrepreneurship and advertising, and reached out to local and non-local businesses interested in placing ads in SiS. With an average of thirty advertisements per issue, a large number of advertisers contacted the two sisters including Autism Speaks, The Mark Morris Dance Group, Jouer Cosmetics, Kendall Conrad, and Chance. The two were also featured in The Montecito Journal and Santa Barbara News Press.

But in 2011, the two girls changed how their advertising profits were organized. After learning about the devastation caused by the tsunami and earthquakes that hit Japan and the famines occurring in the Horn of Africa, Luisa and Fernanda decided to help. From the third issue onward, 10% of the advertising profits went to Direct Relief International to provide support to post-tsunami Japan and to sending medical supplies to people suffering from malnourishment in Kenya and Somalia.

During the busy school year of 2011 and 2012, the sisters took a break from SiS Magazine and focused on their studies. Yet now, in 2012, SiS is back. Still focusing on inspiration drawn from everyday, SiS is a fun and relaxed blog. From fashion to film, sketches to snapshots, Luisa and Fernanda will post something made by them every day. ”SiS is casual and spontaneous–the blog is like a visual archive,” says Luisa. “It’s clean, simple, and the images illustrate our lives.”

Good insight from Antonin Kratochvil….

A great interview from Canon and the VII Agency – watch it here

You should never use camera to make your pictures.
You use yourself, your experience, to make the pictures with the camera.
Not the other way around.

Body Languages: Dance at UCLA – Patrik Giardino for UCLA Magazine

Here is the new issue of the Alumni UCLA magazine – art directed by Charlie Hess. It is a great magazine and Charlie approached me a while back and asked if my photographers would want to come up with and propose a photography driven portfolio/story that incorporated and or was inspired by or about UCLA. Patrik loves to shoot dance so he came up with this idea and we proposed it to Charlie. We love this series and it was great fun to shoot and Patrik did motion too which we will feature later when it is edited. Thanks Charlie!

Young Arts visit Sam Jones in his studio in Santa Monica

A few weeks ago a group of students from the National Young Arts Foundation did a program here in Los Angeles and an eager group of Visual Arts, Photography and Film students visited Sam’s studio. One of the students sent us his notebook page from the visit and Lisa Leone my contact there just sent it to me and we loved it so here it is! This orgranization does great work. From their site:

The National YoungArts Foundation (formerly known as the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts) was established in 1981 by Lin and Ted Arison to identify and support the next generation of artists, and to contribute to the cultural vitality of the nation by investing in the artistic development of talented young artists in the visual, literary, and performing arts. YoungArts provides emerging artists with life-changing experiences with renowned mentors, access to significant scholarships, national recognition, and other opportunities throughout their careers to help ensure that the nation’s most outstanding emerging artists are encouraged to pursue careers in the arts.

MOCA and KesselsKramer – A Conference on Advertising for People Who Don’t Like Advertising….

done in partnership with by MOCA and MOCA TV Laura and I went to one of the afternoon sessions last week. We were invited by the photographer Melissa Castro and it was great to hear David Charles from KK and then the great photographer Norman Seef speak. Norman’s presentation was about The Creative Paradigm Shift; The Creative Imperative and Embracing Uncertainty. One of my favorite projections was ” I think I did something crazy today….” Loved that. Kessek Kramers was founded by Erik Kessels and Johan Kramer in 1996, and is one of the most creative agencies in Amsterdam – and the world. The agency, based in a church, is famous for not liking advertising awards, showing irrelevant information on its website and for its many very creative, non-commercial side projects. And they opened here in LA last Fall – see the piece in the NY Times about the opening here
They also publish books and now there is a book called: Advertising For People Who Do Not Like Advertising – and the link to the site for the book is here Thanks Melissa for the invite!!!
