Happy Halloween from Eye Forward!

HELLO KITTY at the Japanese Museum and KITTY CON at MOCA this weekend!

Los Angeles has been invaded by one of my favorite friends Hello Kitty. And always please remember she is a girl – not a cat – and she is never depicted on all fours!!!

The Japanese Museum just opened the first museum show ever dedicated to HELLO KITTY that is on till April 26th next year but you must buy tickets in advance.

For more information go to the museum site here

The LA Times wrote about the show here

As I am in NY I am sad to say that I will miss the KITTY CON this weekend at the MOCA Geffen Contemporary ( in Japantown and beside the Japanese Museum ) where all her fans and friends will celebrate Hello Kitty’s 40th Anniversary at the first ever official Hello Kitty Convention in the world!

From the Sanrio site:
Hello Kitty Con 2014 is a global gathering of fans and friends to celebrate all things Hello Kitty.
Hello Kitty Con 2014 will offer interactive experiences and events for fans and friends of all ages, including activities, art, exhibits, exclusives, workshops, lectures, panels, sneak peeks, tattoos, food, fun, and many more surprises!Join Hello Kitty and your friends at Hello Kitty Con 2014. As Hello Kitty always says, “You can never have too many friends!”

And if that is not enough – it is probably too late to book it this weekend I would say with all the fans expected to come to LA – The Line Hotel ( the official hotel of the convention ) in Koreatown has decorated a room especially for and in honor of Hello Kitty. And a VIP lounge has also been redecorated for the occasion!

Check out the images here

Wishing I was in LA this weekend for the PINK festivities! HELLO KITTY is 40!

Sam Jones photographs Martin Short – “I Must Say: My Life as Humble Comedy Legend”

David Armstrong RIP – We have lost a great photographer….

NYC and the world was hit hard yesterday by the news of David’s passing in Los Angeles on Saturday at the age of 60 from liver cancer. Every meeting I went to on Monday here his name was mentioned – every conversation I had his name and work came up.

He was a fine art photographer who made the transition into commercial work and fashion easily. I only knew him briefly when he was with Art + Commerce at one point in his career and he was a gentleman and I always loved his images. Such an interesting life and an amazing body of work including his four published books.

Some of the fine appreciations on the internet:

Perry Ogden – Beautiful New Story – Lauren Who Journeyed Through Time in D Magazine

This just came out on our favorite blog A PHOTO EDITOR on their regular feature, THE DAILY EDIT. Spencer was interviewed by Heidi Volpe about the amazing story behind his two assignments from TIME on the Ebola crisis including the cover.

It is a pretty incredible timeline on the cover shoot so read the whole story here

My little add on is that I was on the way to a Sam Smith concert at the Greek Theater that night and was talking to Spencer before the show and during dinner to help him with ideas on where to source the gear. Spencer really went abouve and beyond on this one!

Spencer Lowell featured in COMMUNE: Designed in California

Our friends at Commune have just had their first monograph published by Abrams on their amazing body of work – interior and commercial design.

Spencer has photographed a lot of Commune projects most notably the ACE Hotel Los Angeles from the start of restoration and renovation to completion and he is proud to be featured in the book and the book is gorgeous!

” Commune was established in Los Angeles in 2004 by four like-minded souls—Roman Alonso, Steven Johanknecht, Pamela Shamshiri, and Ramin Shamshiri— with a common mission: to enhance life through design and to blur the lines between disciplines, eras, and styles. ”
