Month: October 2014

Hello there, it’s been a while but here I am – Laura here taking over the blog today!

We’ve had the wonderful opportunity to collaborate on a great event through SPD and with amazing people (Charlie Hess, Lisa Thackaberry, Heidi Volpe, Keisha Dean, to name a few) called “Unsung Heroes of the West”. I started working with Carol here at Eye Forward in 2011 and have attended every single one of these events since I started, but Carol was there in the very beginning and has helped support TEN of these great events.

The last and final “Unsung” event was held last Thursday and it definitely went out with a bang! There was a switch up too, keeping everyone on their toes, this time presenting “Sung Heroes” – people within our industry that are held in high esteem, they are established and incredibly accomplished.

We were humbled to have one of our own, Sam Jones chosen to be presented, and even more elated to hear that he wanted to be presented by another one of our artists, Frank Ockenfels. It was a truly special night not only having our own photographer presented but to be included amongst such great company, including the great Rip Georges and David Armario and the infamous Wet Magazine.

The picture above also captures a highlight from the evening, having four of our artists all in one place! As you can imagine, this doesn’t happen often – the image taken by Kathy who works here as well. From left to right, we have Aaron Smith, Frank Ockenfels, Sam Jones and Spencer Lowell.

Thank you to all involved for a beautiful, inspiring night and for everyone who has/had come out and supported such a fantastic event over the past years!

Frank Ockenfels 3 and Welles Hackett – AKA The Dream Team!

The latest issue of Photo District News November 2014 just came out and it is The Moving Image Issue. There is a great article called Letting Go of The Camera: Three Successful Photographer/DP Collaborations and Welles and Frank are featured.

Frank and Welles have been working together for years – and they are also good friends.

Check out the issue – buy a copy if you do not subscribe ( long live magazines ) as it is good one.

And we love this image they published of the two guys working ( nice form guys and are those Zombies?? ) taken by none other than Brad Hochberg, Art Director extraordinaire of The Refinery, who is also a great photographer and a frequent collaborator with Frank and Welles.

Discovered a new Photo Blog – Thoughts of a Bohemian

“This business has too many Surveyors and not enough Bohemians” Roger Therond, legendary photo man, once said to a good friend of mine, Eliane Laffont. This blog is about restoring the balance and letting the Bohemians talk. With more than 30,000 email subscribers as of January 2014, as well as thousands on Facebook and Twitter, it is fast becoming a must read for anyone in the photography business, whether agencies, photographers, tech companies, investors or just curious people”

Paul Melcher has written a great post on the massive shift in our business due to the change in publishing and the editorial world and the fact that magazines used to be the way in or the way a photographer started or was recognized in our business.

Please read this piece – it is so interesting and a very good observation on where we are at right now….it was picked up by A Photo Editor among others. I had never seen his blog before and now I will follow it!

Frank Ockenfels 3 FX – The Strain – Sunday nights…..

Given the Ebola crisis The Strain seems a little more real these days…

If you have not checked the show out here is a brief overview from The FX website.

The Strain is a high concept thriller that tells the story of “Dr. Ephraim Goodweather,” the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

Co-Creators, Executive Producers and Writers Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan co-wrote the pilot script for The Strain, which was directed by del Toro. Emmy® Award winning Writer and Producer Carlton Cuse serves as Executive Producer/Showrunner and Writer. Gary Ungar also serves as Executive Producer. The series is produced by FX Productions.

Spencer Lowell for TIME Magazine – Cover released today!

We are extremely proud of Spencer today at Eye Forward because his first TIME Magazine cover has just come out.

Spencer had done a story on the Ebola crisis for TIME a few weeks ago and as is often the case with a news weekly his cover story and image was bumped off the cover by a more time sensitive story, the death of Robin Williams in fact.

So it is all the more remarkable to have another chance to make a strong and amazing cover for TIME ( and on such short notice ) with the news this week of the first patient diagnosed in the United States.

Thomas Eric Duncan flew from Liberia to Dallas Texas, and is in hospital now and fighting for his life and there are major concerns of who and how many people he may have infected traveling here and since he arrived.

Working with the amazing photography team at TIME is a pleasure and a privilege.

Congratulations Spencer!
